So what do you think about Phoenix Point being Epic?

I can only say that I’m very disappointed with this news.

I’ll be waiting for that AMA.

Who cares about the PR AMA. There are simple truths here. We won’t get steam/gog on until fucking 2021 unless PP somehow magically releases in the next few months.

Being on EGL means like zero protections, making it an easy game to pirate.

The ambiguous free dlc for a year will likely be shit ripped from the game intentionally so as to not lose money and to padd pockets when they release elsewhere.

At that point they’re going to be yesterday’s news, but I bet you’re booty they’re going to try and full price that shit anyway.

I’m just going to pirate the game, enjoy it, not pay a dime, and quickly forget this company.

Backer # in the 100s here, lost me for life.

If you’re going to force me to wait no point in paying 2 years early for it when it should be on discount, eh?

This is in the FAQ, you still do get a steam or gog code after the year. Whether you also get the dlc is another the thing entirely…

For me, if it weren’t for Epic Games paying for exclusivity I wouldn’t really care because I don’t really care if it is on Steam, GoG, Origin, etc, it doesn’t really matter the launcher to me. BUT with that said paid exclusivity (even if for only x time) is very anti consumer, same reason why I hate pre order bonuses exclusive to gamestop, target, walmart, Amazon, etc. “Stuff” like that is good for the stores but bad for the consumers.

If the announcement was simply “hey EGS gives us a bigger cut of the sales and so we are going to have the first year just on there so we can make the largest profit margins and then move it over to other stores after a year to get missed sales from people who refuse to use Epic Games” I would have had zero issues with that reasoning and would have respected that choice. But paid exclusivity, no I really don’t like that.

Now I am not going to cancel my order, over it even though I am a bit miffed since the game is rather good and I am enjoying it, but with that said if I hadn’t already bought it a long time ago already I would definitely refuse to buy it until it came to more distributors even if I ended up buying it on Epic Games store because I would not want to support that business practice.

I get it, they want to make more money, development is expensive and what not, but paid exclusives are anti consumer, and I would have had much more respect if the decision was made purely on store percentage cuts and not some anti consumer business deal. Not going to bother canceling, but still disappointed at the choice made. But with that said, my multiple friends I definitely won’t recommend the game to them until AFTER the exclusive ends so those would be guarantied sales won’t happen until after this bad practice has run its course and ended.

Refunding this. I am seriously angry about this and my love and respect for the creator of the original X-Com is the only reason why this post isn’t filled with bile and expletives.

The clear dislike for the latest Metro game being an Epic only game garnered such a huge and wide ranging customer revolt that there is absolutely no excuse for this. Anyone with even the barest hint of intelligence would have made such a boneheaded move as this.

So what is bad about the epic games launcher? is it just that people dont want to install multiple launchers ? or something more then that?

Was not in the faq when I wrote that…

They’re super appreciative and respectful of their backers, that is until Epic rolls in and moneyhat’s them. Then they’re, “We’ll happily give refunds.” Disgusting, and I’ll be taking them up on their offer of a refund.

Well for one thing there are serious concerns about security and Epic Games are largely owned by Tencent who have dubious relations to the Chinese government which is an irredeemable commie/capitalist monstrosity. The Epic Store’s penchant for timed exclusives is also really anti-consumer and should never be supported. Same as with the last Metro game. This is a PR disaster and most likely a lot of people are refunding their copies of the game (I have refunded mine) and for the same of the dev team, I hope whatever they got from the Epic store is enough because I don’t want them to suffer because of the idiot or idiots who made this decision.

Paid exclusivity is very anti consumer, if It was just a “hey we are going with this store for a year because they have a better percentage take” a few less people would be mad (there would still be people mad but not quit as many), but paid exclusives is very anti consumer, it’s just as bad as stuff like pre order bonuses that are exclusive to certain stores.

I will give you 1 (one) penny to have sex with my sister. She is very…rubenesque? Agree to my terms, and you will be the next Arnold Schwarzenegger!

But seriously, Destiny 2, Fallout 76, Anthem, Diablo going mobile, EA announcing record profits then immediately laying off 800 employees, etc, etc. I am old enough to remember the Gaming Crash of 1983, and what I have seen recently makes me think we need another big crash. If for no other reason than to remind game developers that pushing their customers too far may cost them dearly. Personally, I intend to heap as much coal on this dumpster fire as possible.

And this is the very core of the entire debate.

Sorry, not interested. I promised something to my wife on altar and I will keep that promise even if you would lay down miss universe (or miss of something else) before me.

I’m also confused about that anti consumer move, but well I’m too much interested in this game. And I already have paid Snapshot without Epic being part in it. I would probably wait one year to omit Epic Launcher, but well I’m getting too old for this kind of waiting.

I know, don’t get me wrong.
I don’t think there is going to be more than PR in it, the FAQ already gives all the information.

I’m a bit conflicted right now, because this was a game that I have been waiting for long time. I’m a fan of Julian previous games, hell I was a betatester Laser Squad Nemesis (the first game that I paid a subscription and the last…)

But I don’t think I can support a company that makes this kind of decision/ changes and I want to see how they are going to justify it.

Depending of what I read I’ll make my decision about supporting this project.

That’s because they are backpedaling very hard, they added it afterward. There’s a huge amount of backlash that they didn’t seem to expect and someone supposedly heard a dev on discord admitting this was a mistake (take it with a grain of salt).

On a more positive note:

Phoenix Point forums have never been so lively!

A smart marketing move?

Sure! In the same way we will never forget the name RMS Titanic.

Very disappointed. I was really looking forward to this game.

The game being an EPIC exclusive doesn’t bother me that much by itself, if it had been one from the start I would probably have chosen to still back it but when I chose to back it on FIG it was with the promise that it would be available on GOG. Now almost a year after taking my money, I’m told “Sorry but you can’t have it on your chosen preferred platform unless you wait another year after release because we’ve made a deal with EPIC. You can choose to either like it or lump it.”

So I’ve chosen to lump it. Refund requested.

To be clear I still hope that the developers make a great game, the more great X-Com style games the better but I cannot support what is, in my opinion, a very anti-consumer move. Removing a customers choice after the customer has already paid is just wrong, in my opinion.

I’m bluntly spiteful and not at all altruistic here. A business has a right to favor their livelihood, but so does a consumer. The relationship between them is not friendship or brotherhood.

For a lesson to be learned it must first be taught. I hope they flop and are quickly forgotten, bones left in the digital space to warn other developers of the stupidity of unreasonable greed.

You’re completely right though; had this been discussed with backers beforehand or clearly communicated from the start it would have been totally different.

They’re going to have to weigh the money EPIC gives them over the loss in sales and public opinion to decide if this was a good deal for them and it seems like it’s not the easy math they thought it was, but the have EPIC’s slchlong in their booty already so there’s no point in clenching now. Not for an entire long year.

Don’t have the card number. I said that I dont have the card anymore It was one of those visas or whatever preloaded with 50 bucks. I don’t want a refund, I want Gollop to reverse this decision and stop being a meathead. At a bare minimum, I’ll take it on unepic scam store AND on steam once it releases on steam a year later. It’s especially disgusting to me considering I’ve ALWAYS held Gollop in very high regard. It disgusts me because I expect this trash behavior from others, I did not expect it from him.
