I suspect they haven’t tested enough with the DLC disabled, if at all. With activated DLC there is no problem with the Arthron Umbra and when deactivated it just shouldn’t appear in the game. Probably they tested mostly the DLC and that’s maybe all.
But it remains a serious mistake and they should fix it as soon as possible, totally agree.
@etermes: You have the DLC activated … this will not help the most people here.
I think the problem is that the Umbra should never be there when the DLC is not activated / not present = freeze.
You are right, I had to use the DLC,
and new Mutations are out of context if you don’t buy LOTA

this is not a problem related to having or not DLCs … already tested with or without DLC the problem persists !!!
Only for clarification:
You started a new campaign with the DLC “Legacy of the Ancients” activated and when you kill an Arthron Umbra it stated “Prepare …” and the game freezes?
I tried with the first DLC… don’t remeber its name… and nothing changed… still broken
It’s tied to the most recent DCL.
OK, this will not help, the Arthron Umbra should only appear with the “Legacy of the Ancients” DLC, the last one.
The bug seems to be, that this Arthron Umbra appears without this one last DLC and then no other combination would help.
Sadly you have to wait for the next patch.

One solution was suggested earlier is to use tasers on Umbras to stun them, can’t let them die. I had to equip 4 soldiers per squad with tasers. Takes about 3-4 zaps to paralyze one. Still pain in the behind though cuz you have to get up close, soldiers take a lot of unnecessary damage.
You should give the Synedrion paralysing weapons a try: the Athena sniper rifle, Hera pistol and Aspida APC (this one can paralyse an Arthron with one hit, it deals 40 paralysing damage, nice to farm Pandorans for food or mutagens).
You can use Athena NS-2 Sniper Rifle, also Aspida if you have one in the mission:
You can deal with Umbra or Shade of Death (Tar Shadow ability), of course Shadow has 500 HP, you need more paralysis, 50 in this case

I received a response today from devs, the hotfix is in the works,
if we are lucky it will be released tomorrow and Umbra bug will be fixed
