Summary:
The technician can not stun if the enemy is on an adjacent tile 45 degrees when there is a wall corner between the technician and the enemy.
Expected behavior:
- An enemy is hiding behind a wall right next to a door.
- The technician moves to the tile in the door standing next to the enemy at a 45 degree angle
- Using the melee attack the enemy takes damage and is stunned
Actual behavior:
- An enemy is hiding behind a wall right next to a door.
- The technician moves to the tile in the door standing next to the enemy at a 45 degree angle
- Using the melee attack does nothing
This happened multiple every time I tried. If this is not expected behavior, I.E. the melee attack only works on a 90 degree angle - like crates, I would consider this a bug.
If I’m understanding you right, you’re saying you cannot melee attack diagonally. If correct, I’m sure that is by design. As you note, you cannot open boxes or heal diagonally either, but only orthogonally suggesting an intentional design. Should they change the design? I think so. If you can range attack diagonally, it should be consistent. Same with the crates. Maybe orthogonal design (4-direction) is easier in this very build and 8-direction will come later.

Thanks for the clarification. I was afraid it might be by design. The reason I believe it is a bug though is that if I remember correctly the med pack can only heal orthogonally but the technician has a wider range due to his mech arms.
I need to try again on open terrain and I thought maybe this was related to the edge of the door occupying the tile orthogonal between the crab man and the technician.

I encountered this as well. I was hoping even if the technician couldn’t attack diagonally that they would step one square to attack, coming out of cover like shooters do, then go back to their origin square afterwards. This is not the case however, hopefully Snapshot will add that function by the endgame.
I was expecting something like that too. In his stream @UnstableVoltage mentioned that you don’t get the option to melee if there is no target within reach. Since melee doesn’t give you a hit percentage this is at least unexpected behavior.
A few playthroughs later I can confirm that if you diagonally melee attack an enemy it doesn’t work if there is a wall between the technician and the enemy orthogonally. It works perfectly fine however if you attack in the open.
