like thats one of the main reasons i backed this, the expectation of getting a steam key on release

If you backed or pre-ordered the game before the Epic announcement (March 12th), then you will get a Steam or GOG key after the 12 month Epic exclusivity period. If you purchased after the announcement, you will only receive an Epic key.
