I know this has been discussed forever, but the idea of humanity surrendering was the first sign I would have problems with X2. I mean, I really fucking lived EU/EW, I was attached to my squads, and I took every defeat like a very personal one. The idea that after that after all those sacrifices, a bunch of greasy oily politician bastards sold mankind for their own personal gain (for what other reason could there be for the surrender?), made me fucking angry.
If it was to put a spin to the formula, they could have put the Gollop Chamber as a teleport device and taken the fight to the alien homeland.
The official story is that the aliens came in hot and heavy right from week one. Mutons, Ethereals, and Sectopods vs ballistics. The aliens then assaulted and destroyed the XCOM base by the second month. For the X2 story none of what you’re talking about ever happened.
I get being invested, but i think it was a nice take on the formula even still. Taking the fight to the alien homeland has occurred in ogXcom, x: apocalypse, and the ufo:after series (if i remenber correctly). Predicating it based on xcom falling on its face was an actual new idea. Obviously, im not going to convince you, and your opinion is your opinion, and that is fine. We’re probably just not going to agree on this one. Which is also fine.
Gollop Chamber is poor replacement for real homeworld, Cydonia so we could have “progress of species” last mission story. Not a bad idea, just bad ending.
I agree, XCom2 recycled idea of Xcom defeat, which isnt bad at all. As mentioned, if one was unable to develop lasers in first few months, and armor, Xcom would be soon defeated. But that needs to be a really rookie player Let Faxis Xcom2 be, its PP time!
Jake seems like a really great guy, the way he has no issues with declaring the inspiration OGXCom was for him in his life, or all the troubles they went through with the remake, even declaring failure more than once.
Reading the story about what Jake went through remaking XCOM was pretty inspiring to me. Every time he’s on camera I feel like you can tell he’s, like, one of us. Loves X-Com and put a lot of love and effort into his remake. Also, it’s really awesome seeing both Jake and Julian on camera together (I think the two I saw were both Eurogamer interviews) talking about each other’s ideas, and even building off of each other’s ideas.
Jake himself as said the more games of this kind the better (IIRC he was talking about the Mario Rabbids XCom), and Julian also acknowledged withour FXCom, there would be no PP. So I’m hoping Firaxis will answer to the phenomenal sucess PP WILL have with an even better X3
Hope they have paid him a big fat check for IP, but I acknowledge
that only in terms of NEW GEN players realizing there are turn based strategies,
not just FPS and RTS.
I think Jullian only gets royalties from Apocalypse, meaning all the success of XEU and X2 didn’t get him a dime, at least not directly. But the crowdfunding success for PP was way above the more optimistic scenarios, so in the end he did get something in return. But I say that knowing very well many artists get totally screwed when giving total control of their creations to some publisher. Heck, Superman’s creators are probably the most famous of the bunch:
The market for turn based tactical games isn’t exactly saturated, has a strong core who probably won’t mind buying games from different IPs and probably belongs to a slightly older demographic who can afford to do so.
In these circumstances, the two developers promoting each other really is the way to go, especially when the games share so much DNA.
As for PP’s “phenomenal success”, we’ll have to wait for the finished product. I like what I’ve seen so far and it looks promising, but it’s the end result that counts.
I’m also wondering what will be the response to FiraXcom’s Gollop chamber. I know Julian said in an old video that they were considering returning the favor with something named after Jake but what will it be?
Gospel of the Exalted may have some part like Solomon’s Laws Or there could be some top skill in one of the DoA classes like Solomon’s Blessing compared to some other skill like Nergal’s Might.
For sure! Of course, we have no idea by now to see what will the final game be like, I’m just crossing my fingers for it (of course, or else I wouldn’t had backed it up). I just find it a really cool story, @JulianG creating a great game, loosing it to Firaxis, seeing it reborn through the work of something like a disciple, and now returning to carry the torch. It’s like one of those anime where the retired master goes out of retirement to kick some butt and show how it’s done.
It’s fucking sad. As a similar story, the Marvel movies are now making all the money in this world and some, and many creators have claimed not seeing a cent whatsover from their work beeing put on screen. The best they can hope is that being known as the creator from “that” character will bring them more work and comissions
