The 3AP experiment

I strongly hope that it is a modd. Everything else is secondary. I’m not a fan of your idea, I’m sorry. Not everything is good for the game. May I ask why I’ m being labelled as a causal player? Only CC members understood the game and everyone else is simply explained as “causal players” right? Only you have the say what is hardcore and what is not?

Well, it is only an experiment. I just wanted to see if my analysis held up, and the best way to do that was to remove the amount of APs my peeps get to use each turn. So far, it is only now starting to make any kind of difference - but it’s too early to tell atmo.

As for ‘casual’ vs ‘hardcore’. I think it’s more that over the previous few months, you & others have accused me and those who agree with me of being some sort of elite hardcore who want to ruin your fun by making this game too difficult. So I tend to assume that you want a less challenging, more casual experience.

Nothing wrong with that: it’s what Easy & Veteran should be there for - @MadSkunky makes no bones about playing this game on Veteran because he enjoys it more that way. I get that absolutely - it’s why I play on Heroic rather than Legendary (I like the choices it gives me in terms of recruitment & exploration much more than the very limited parameters of Legend).

As I’ve said before and shall continue to say at every opportunity: this game’s difficulty settings should enable it to appeal to everyone - from a player who just wants to enjoy the story and not have to worry about getting creamed by the Pandas, to a player who wants to scrape a win by the skin of his teeth and feel like he’s earned it with blood, sweat and tears (and every stage in between those 2 extremes).

Problem for me and many others on this forum is it currently caters for those who like a more casual ‘super-hero’ kind of experience, at the expense of those who backed the Fig campaign in the expectation that they would be getting the modern equivalent of the old X-com punishment, which is what attracted them to TBS games in the first place.

Doesn’t make me better than you or anyone else who likes this game. It just makes me someone who is disappointed that this game is nowhere near as challenging as it was marketed to be.

I’m wondering if the ‘casual’ vs ‘hardcore’ players argument is also based on how quickly a person plays the game? As more DLC has been added the game can be a bit overwhelming with all the different potential missions on the globe and trying to decide which are vital and which not. Add in how the random distribution of placement across the map can create transport issues with access and even guessing if a mission is possible in the available time to get there, I suspect some players including me at times rush missions to more on to the next. This sometimes puts me in ridiculous situations where I’m being blasé and have to use a few naught point extending tricks.

I was a fig backer and I’m not sure if the qualifies any argument to distinguish between a casual or hardcore player. I’m neither and have played on all levels, and played these games for many years. I definitely agree that a ‘second wave’ option might solve the issue. But some people play the game a lot and others not. I may depend on how much spare time one has. If you become an advanced expert at the game it’s always going to seem easier than for others.

As an afterthought, I hope that the major effort is focused on fixing bugs, as there are still enough to be found and some are incredibly annoying.

Believe me, I never intend to push this as something that should be implemented into the base game.

I’m just testing out a theory. At worst (from your point of view) it will either be a mod, a SWO or an additional Difficulty Level that you never have to choose if you don’t want it.

Well, since it usually takes me 6 realtime months to complete a campaign because I can only play for an hour or so in the mornings, I’m not sure that speed of gameplay qualifies me in that regard.

I also choose Heroic cos it doesn’t force me to rush through the game, but lets me take it at my own pace.

For me, the plethora of strategic choices is one of the things that keeps me playing the game, despite my many frustrations with it. I love the fact that it’s down to me to prioritise what’s important and what is not, but I am completely free to make the wrong (or right) choices. On the other hand, my best mate really dislikes it, cos it throws him into analysis paralysis.

I never rush missions. I take my time, build up my forces, and strike where I deem most appropriate given the strategic situation. I also rarely overextend my peeps on the tactical map, preferring to keep a tight-knit leapfrogging set of fireteams mutually supporting one another.

On the other hand, my ‘no Terminators’ rule means that I don’t get to First Turn Strike (except with my mortar team) and have to deal with waves of Pandas as they come.

Personally, I find it more interesting that way - but that’s just me.

There are few false statements here:

  • Not only CC members understand the game. Modders understand it even more.
  • There is also for sure bunch of players who can be considered as hardcore players knowing the game really well, and they are not in Community Council. @Rainer, @Saph, and probably some more who I don’t remember right now, for sure are more hardcore than most of the council.
  • Even in the council we have some casual players. But thanks to their position there and all the discussions they take part in, they tend to know game better than some random player.

Everyone have the say what can be hardcore in this game. Now game for sure lets meta player overpower the enemy, thus it is considered more for casual players. Even me… I really don’t consider myself as a hardcore player in TBS games, but I can win Legendary difficulty in PP almost as some Normal difficulty in other games. So clearly something is wrong with the balance and what player can perform.

now all players seeking challenge in the game have their solution to the inbalance… “brilliant” I must say
