Past early stage of PP campaign AR overwatch is only OK against worms and Mindfraggers. Can be used for softening targets or zoning them.

maybe if they allowed follow up overwatch shots if you have APs for it… so if you overwatch with 4AP, and have a weapons with 1AP Overwatch shot requirement, you would do 4 shots instead of just one… It would make defensive overwatches a lot more potent, you would not always try to rush to kill everything, but you would set up the shooting ground… (Of course, same behavior should also work for AI)

Yes, that’s why I talk of “active” defense. Trusting to cover and OW in PP is suicidal. But a well planned defense can be surprisingly effective. (And it would be even better if they brought back RF the way it was on release). It’s just that alpha striking with OP combos is far more efficient and reliable. Why plan a defense when you can cripple the OF in the first turn to the point where a defense becomes unnecessary?

I get the complaint that difficulty is such that OP combos feel like the only way to play, but it’s not really.

Overwatch isn’t big in PP as whole - it’s much more reliable to clear the board on your turn. Anything other than sniper rifle firing center-mass from afar isn’t going to do much to armored enemies (which is all of them) anyway.

Alpha strike and quick kills is the base any player will look at first, it’s the most obvious.

It makes sense to penalize it so other more complex approach become more efficient and even mandatory sometimes.

As soon as systematic alphe strike works, most players won’t bother look at anything else.

And no this game hasn’t only alpja strike and from far. Moreover I don’t use any op tool, it’s possible.

I think relying primarily on OW for defense against enemies that have to move within range before attacking is a learned habit from Fxcom and it is not very useful in PP.

When I talk of active defense in PP, OW plays a minor role in it. What I want is for the enemies to get close and receive some damage without dealing significant damage to my troops, not kill them off with OW.
