How to equip sniper rifles, on assault troop?

How to equip sniper rifles, on assault troop? I have the proficiency from an inate skill i took when levelling up, i can grab one off a sniper in a mission, but cant equip it when not on mission, so its extremely time consuming every single mission.

Equipment screen filters gear based on the soldier’s class. You can check/uncheck the filters (left side) as needed to equip other items.
