Area in Level with a Head Icon?

Sometimes I see an area in a level that’s marked white and has some kind of head icon:

What exactly is this?
I couldn’t find anything online, and I went there once and it seemed to trigger something but I couldn’t figure out what.
Didn’t find anything about it in the Phoenixpedia either, though admittedly I didn’t look too much (I’d rather not learn about game mechanics before encountering them so some of the stuff there seemed spoilery to me.)

Those do seem like odd leftovers, rather then intentional parts of mission design.
