Ok, advice from me:
Try to build a second ship in the very beginning. After that raid a faction to get a third ship.

As soon as my second Manticore is ready, I travel always with 2 ships to a mission.

In the last mission you are allowed to deploy 9 soldiers.

Or… if this actually is the last mission, then It wont matter if I loose one base while traveling my second ship to the mission. I will of course save on the “geoscape” before traveling and save a separate file at the start of the mission.
