Question about world mechanics

I've never played any of the X-Com or other related games, but the Facebook ad for this really got me intrigued.  However, I'm unclear about the world level mechanics of the game and would like to know more before pre-ordering.

How does the game play out?

1. Is it more of an RPG/story driven experience, where the player starts out with objective A, B and C.  They can do them in any order, and when A is done, E and F become available.  Order may or may not matter.  For example, you get an objective that an ally is being attacked, whether you do it right away, or go off and do some other stuff for a few hours, you can come back and help your ally.

2. Or is it more of a grand strategy/empire builder style?  The aliens and various human factions are all doing their thing regardless of what you as a player do.  In the previous example, if an ally calls for help and you don't respond in time, your ally may get wiped off the map.

Which style of game play can we expect in PP?

Hi,

Out of your two examples, the gameplay style for Phoenix Point is far closer to the second. However, there is a slight hint of some of the elements in the first. There will be story elements that only continue if you pursue them. Likewise, the world will still continue on without you if you do not act.

Thanks for the quick response.

So more of a Total War or Paradox Grand Strategy where you are just one piece of the larger, moving puzzle and there are objectives that you can choose to follow.  With the story elements in PP, will they be fairly static, or will changes in the world potentially effect or cancel out any objectives?

That actually made me think of another question.  Will PP be turn based or real time at the world level?  I watched the battle video, and saw those will be turn based, and look pretty cool BTW.

The tactical combat is turn-based, just like the original X-Com. The world map/strategy level is real-time (but you can speed it up and pause (like Stellaris for example)).

As for the story, there will be some story elements which are constant, and some dynamic bits which will change based on your actions (or inactions).

Again, thanks for answering my questions so quickly.  The Stellaris example explain things well (though speaking of Stellaris, just please don't have a cool idea like 3 different FTL modes, get lazy, and strip it down to 1).
